Wright Brothers Battersea

OPENED 312 DAYS AGO

Wright Brothers have opened their fifth site in Battersea, part of the Battersea Power Station redevelopment.

They’re serving all the usual seafood here but have also introduced a few meat options to take full advantage of the new Josper grill, a feature unique to this location.

The Spot:

This is right on the river, in the shadow of one of London’s most recognisable buildings and some of the best seats will be filled come summertime when they open a 40 seater terrace. We’re already visualising ourselves sitting near the water with a glass of crisp white wine and a plate of shellfish. There’s also an open kitchen fringed with seating and that big Josper grill in the centre.

The Food:

Wright Brothers are, of course, known for their fresh seafood. We often nip into the original Borough branch in Borough Market for a swift round of oysters or spend Sunday afternoon working over a crab with too much good wine. They’ve put some of those classics on the menu here, like the fish soup with rouille and Gruyere and all the usual oysters and shellfish platters are still available. In addition, though, there’s a menu of raw and small plates, followed by Josper grilled dishes.

Small plates include grilled wild red Argentinian prawns with chilli oil and Galician octopus with ajo blanco and jalapeño. Grilled seafood includes fillet of Newlyn hake, Scottish halibut and coal roasted salmon.

Then, there’s the meat – a total departure from the norm for these guys. They’re focusing on a few large pieces of meat, including half chickens, rib eye steaks and a selection of other beef cuts.

They’re serving a selection of Neal’s Yard cheeses (as you’ll find at all their restaurants) and just three desserts: chocolate fondant, lemon posset and treacle tart.

The Drinks:

Cocktails here nod to the location with names like Smoking Chimney (vodka, Tio Pepe Fino en Rama, apple and cinnamon shrub) and The Mariner (vodka, elderflower cordial, lime cordial, cucumber juice, jalapeño, egg white and absinthe).

There’s always a decent wine selection at Wright Brothers too – we love a glass of crisp fizz with our oysters to kick things off before we delve into the full list, where there’s loads to choose from. Beers and ciders are selected from around the UK.

The Damage:

Oysters start at £9.50 for 3 and shellfish platters start at £29.50 for the house selection. Raw and small plates are £9.75-13.75 and grilled seafood £10.50-27.50. Grilled meat dishes start at £15 for a half chicken.

A cocktail costs around £10, wines start in the low twenties and a beer will cost around a fiver.

In a Nutshell:

Wright Brothers has always been very consistent in the quality and cooking of their seafood and we’re looking forward to jumping on the Thames Clipper and checking this out, particularly once the weather warms up and we can sit outside and watch the river life go by. There’s also the added attraction of surf and turf at this site if that’s your thing.
