Wild Rice and Mamasan

OPENED 11 DAYS AGO

Two-in-one Thai restaurant Wild Rice and Mamasan arrives in Soho.

Multifunctional destinations are having a bit of a moment – Fare Bar + Canteen takes the concept to new heights (read: canteen, restaurant, cocktail and wine bar), cocktail bar Heads + Tails delivers two different experiences, and now, Wild Rice and Mamasan has hopped on the bandwagon with Thai cuisine.

The Spot:

Located in the basement, Mamasan is inspired by Thailand’s bustling Chinatown district with street food snacks and a setting to match (think vibrantly-coloured laterns and bright neon signs). The upstairs floor houses Wild Rice, reflecting the classic wooden buildings synonymous of Bangkok’s old town, while its menu takes a more modern approach to Thai cuisine.

The Food:

Reinventing time-honoured Thai recipes with British ingredients, Wild Rice brings you small, shareable plates that change with the seasons. Options range from pulled chicken soup to vegan-friendly salads with avocado, courgette and lime. In contrast, Mamasan is decidedly traditional with street food favourites such as Southern Thai fried chicken, or spicy larb fries (made with toasted rice, lime and chilli).

The Drinks:

Wild Rice offers an extensive wine list, while, much like Chinatown’s holes-in-the-wall spots, Mamasan serves bubble tea and non-alcoholic cocktails.

The Damage:

Small plates cost around £3-£6, mains range between £8 and £15, while bottles of wine start at £25. But for their soft launch, they are offering 20% off your food bill until December 18.

In a Nutshell:

Packing two entirely different Thai restaurants in one space, Wild Rice and Mamasan almost makes that all-important question more difficult. What do you want for dinner? Thai food. Ok, but what kind of Thai food? Casual street food or forward-thinking, seasonally-focused fare? Good luck with date night guys.
