Unico Gelato

OPENED 125 DAYS AGO

Unico Gelato is a new gelato and specialist Italian sandwich shop, now open in St. John’s Wood.

The team behind the gelato were inspired to start making it by a famous gelato shop in Bologna, called Cremeria Funivia. We think this could easily join the ranks of London’s best ice cream and gelato shops.

The Spot:

This is in St. John’s Wood close to Regent’s Park. Come summer time we can see ourselves grabbing a cone to go and wandering through the rose garden.

The Food:

The founders of Unico are childhood friends Andrea Vitali, Enrico Zecchini and Andrea Tonelli who have links with Cremeria Funivia, one of the most famous gelato shops in Bologna. Their smooth, creamy gelato comes in classic flavours including chocolate, salted caramel and vanilla but also some exciting combos like cremino (hazelnut infused into chocolate and cream) and cream Bologna (vanilla and Sicilian lemon zest).

It’s actually not all gelato here – they sell cakes, pastries and ‘sandwiches’ too. The latter are called ‘bubbles’ a type of spherical Italian creation a bit like a savoury doughnut. Each bubble has a filling from a different region of Italy, including Parma ham, aubergine Parmigiana and spinach and ricotta cheese, from Verona.

The Drinks:

You won’t be surprised to learn that these Italians love their coffee, sourcing 100% Arabica beans from around the world. All the usual preparations are available, alongside a selection of iced coffees for the warmer weather, tea and affogato which is a scoop of ice cream topped with a shot of coffee – the best of both worlds.

Throughout the cooler months, they serve a thick, creamy hot chocolate.

The Damage:

Two scoops of gelato starts at £4 and prices vary with flavours. Bubbles are £2.50.

In a Nutshell:

This is a great addition to an area that, frankly, can be rather difficult to navigate when it comes to refreshment. The combination of wide open spaces and lots of tourists means it hasn’t made a name for itself as a dining destination. We think Unico will thrive here.
