Tratra

OPENED 162 DAYS AGO

Tratra is a meat and charcuterie-focused restaurant from acclaimed French chef and food writer Stéphane Reynaud, open in Shoreditch’s Boundary Hotel.

Reynaud grew up in the Ardèche region of France and the menu at Tratra reflects this.

The Spot:

Reynaud is taking over the whole basement of The Boundary Hotel for his first restaurant outside of Paris, dividing it into a restaurant area, wine bar and separate dining room. It’s a fairly glitzy room with lots of twinkling lights and red velvet upholstery.

The Food:

This is one for the carnivores – Reynaud grew up on a pig farm and is something of a butchery expert, so meat is the main focus of the menu. He’s famous for his roast pork with prunes and beer and his love of regional classics such as steak frites, cassoulet and pot au feu. There’s fish too, including razor clams and sardines, served with sea lettuce butter.

The Drinks:

You’ll find plenty of wine here, with a list designed to match a simple plate of charcuterie or any of the more robust dishes on the menu. Tratra is designed to suit any occasion, be it for a glass of something and a nibble, or a more substantial meal that lasts into the wee hours.

The Damage:

Snacks start at £8 for those salted sardines with a plate or charcuterie setting you back £18 (enough for 2-3 people sharing). Starters are £6 – £16 and main courses for 1 or 2 people to share range from £15 – £22.

In a Nutshell:

Reynaud is huge in France and it’s exciting that he’s decided to land in London for his next project – further evidence that London is now one of the world’s greatest gastronomic cities. The deal here is traditional French dishes with a modern update and if you enjoy meat, it’s a fair bet you’re going to love his work.
