The Tappit Hen Wine Bar & Restaurant

OPENED 46 DAYS AGO

The Tappit Hen Wine Bar & Restaurant has opened its doors in the City.

Brought to you by wine experts Davy’s, The Tappit Hen offers a standout selection of carefully chosen wines with seasonal British cooking to match.

The Tappit Hen - Dining room

The Spot:

The Tappit Hen couldn’t have chosen a better home, housed inside a former cellar of Sandeman Port with evidence of its rich wine history throughout. While the space has been transformed into an elegant two-storied bar and restaurant, many of the features are still there: your banquet seating is made of barrel staves, lighting comes from a vintage Tappit Hens (2.1 litre bottles), and the two private dining rooms lead through to 15th century cellars. When can we move in?

The Food:

Showcasing modern British cooking, the seasonally-minded menu is packed with comforting fare such as pan-roasted rump of beef (served alongside butternut squash and girolles); Kentish Hop sausage with lentils and pork belly rib; and gnocchi with cauliflower. But if you’re looking for something lighter, The Tappit Hen’s bar menu has you covered with a tempting line-up of tartines, served with smoked duck Welsh rarebit or burnt aubergine, as well as small shareable plates (look out for artichokes and sweet potato hash browns).

The Drinks:

The bar at The Tappit Hen is already becoming a hit with City wine lovers. The wine list is extensive, but expect no less than fine wines, a range of Ports and fortified wines (nodding to the building’s history), and many rare vintages for those in the know.

The Damage:

Small plates are priced at around £7-£11; mains vary between £14 and £22.

In a Nutshell:

Bringing together the best pleasures of life (British food with a glass of fine wine, obviously), The Tappit Hen is an upscale yet approachable destination for drinks, dinner and more. And in celebration of their opening, they are offering JOL readers a free Portonic cocktail with your meal.
