The Most Exciting London Restaurants Opening Soon

We already bring you the most up to date information on London’s hottest openings but what about those that are in the pipeline? These are the restaurants set to open in the next few weeks that we’re really excited about…

Sapling

A new wine-driven neighbourhood restaurant is opening in Dalston. It’s being set up by a guy called Bob Ritchie, who grew up on a dairy farm in Scotland and sommelier and general manager Dan – wait for it – Whine. There will be a list of around 36 regularly-changing wines and a selection of grower Champagnes and other sparklers. The food menu looks fantastic, too, including gougeres with smoked cod’s roe; bread from The Dusty Knuckle; langoustines with lardo; hake with cockle and potato sauce; Medjool date pudding with pistachio creme anglaise and set cream with rhubarb.

It sounds like the kind of place you drop into spontaneously, right? And it is except get this – you can also book a table. We love this flurry of wine-focused restaurants that continue to open up around London; the recently opened Parson’s in Covent Garden being another fine example.

When will it open? Mid-March 2018.

Where will it be? Dalston.


Leroy

The fantastic Ellory restaurant has now closed for business but don’t despair because the guys behind it are opening up Leroy very soon. Ellory was known for its modern European menu and exclusively European wine list, and although the menu is still very much up in the air for Leroy, we know it’s going to serve snacks and small plates, without a set menu in the evening like its predecessor.

They’ll also be making their own vermouth – very on-trend.

When will it open? Mid-March 2018.

Where will it be? Shoreditch.


BRAT

This is the first solo opening from chef Tomos Parry, formerly of Kitty Fisher’s. A ‘brat’ was, apparently, a colloquial term for a turbot so it’s not a reference to Tomos’ temperament, which is a relief. The restaurant was inspired by Getaria, a coastal town in the Basque Country well known for its barbecues. Tomos said of the opening, ‘BRAT will focus on a particularly gentle and simple style of fire cooking recognisable from Getaria, which generally means buy well and don’t ruin it. Since leaving Kitty’s, I’ve been working closely with farmers and fisherman to create a menu which is structured around native ingredients at the peak of their season.’

Example dishes include cedarwood sea trout with Jersey cream and river herbs and wild mussel and cockle soup. There will also be plenty of influences from Tomos’ Welsh heritage, including the Welsh national dish, cawl.

Gizzi Erskine

Gizzi Erskine at Mare Street Market

Gizzi Erskine has been doing pop-ups like the recent (and hugely successful) Pure Filth at Tate for years but now she’s putting her name to something more permanent. It’s going to be at the new Mare Street Market in Hackney and will combine her two loves: food and music.

There will be a restaurant serving dishes like roasted buffalo cauliflower with Gorgonzola sauce and pickled celery, and a rotisserie chicken with chicken schmaltz bearnaise. There will also be a smoker and a grill, so lots of cooking over live fire and, importantly, a market selling locally produced food and drink.

Where does the music come in? There’s a podcast station, record shop and events space. So yeah, it’s ambitious but Gizzi is sure to make a success of it.

When will it open? March 2018.

Petersham Nurseries Covent Garden

This is a second, central London site for the original destination restaurant in Richmond, and the home shop, garden shop/florist and delicatessen is already open. Soon, there will be two restaurants.

The Petersham will serve British-Italian food while La Goccia’s menu will focus on food cooked on the grill or in a wood-burning oven. Both restaurants open onto a courtyard, and you can expect laid-back glamour and plenty of floral influences.

When will it open? Deli is open now, restaurants open March 2018.

Where will it be? Covent Garden.


 Tortilleria el Pastor

Sam and James Hart and Crispin Somerville, the guys behind Tacos el Pastor (who make some of London’s best tacos) are opening a ‘tortilleria’ near Maltby Street Market. It’s basically going to be a big ol’ taco factory, stamping out a variety of corn tacos to buy and take away, along with fresh salsas, cheeses from Gringa Dairy, Mexican beers and basically everything you need to make real Mexican food at home.

There will also be a small, eat-in taco bar seating 26, where you can eat your fill of their fantastic namesake al pastor tacos – that’s marinated pork shoulder, caramelised pineapple and guacamole. Yum.

When will it open? March 2018.

Where will it be? Bermondsey.


Din Tai Fung

The hugely popular dim sum chain is opening in London and this is very exciting because, well, dumplings are brilliant. This is a chain, with branches in the US, Australia, Singapore and more but don’t let that put you off because it’s excellent.

The London branch will open in the Centre Point redevelopment this spring.

When will it open? April 2018.

Where will it be? Centre Point.


A Wong

Andrew Wong Bloomberg

A Wong almost single-handedly changed the image of Victoria from a place you wanted to pass through as quickly as possible to a place you visit for lunch. The dumplings are world class and among the classics are some really fun, creative flourishes like his famous custard buns shaped like white peaches.

Soon, we won’t have to cram into one branch because a second is opening in The Bloomberg Arcade, which already has some fabulous restaurants. We see a food crawl on the cards…
