The Lalit London

OPENED January 26th, 2017

The Lalit London is a 70-room Indian boutique hotel, contemporary Indian restaurant, gym and holistic-ayurvedic spa, just south of Tower Bridge.

The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group is India’s fastest growing, privately owned hospitality group, and this is its first overseas property, outside of its original 12 in India.

What and Where?

Previously St. Olave’s Grammar School, this 180 year old, Grade II-listed building in Bermondsey will now house 70 uniquely decorated rooms. It’s a stone’s throw from the City and perfectly located for easy access to some of London’s best food markets, along with a host of newly opened eateries including Bala Baya, Padella, and Caravan Bankside.

The conversion of the old British panels, vaulted ceilings and red brick facades are juxtaposed with traditional Indian fabrics and artifacts. The Great Hall is now a pan Indian restaurant, the Governors’ Room a cocktail bar, and the Headmaster’s office the luxury suite. Who knew you could ever be motivated to want to visit the headmaster’s office?

Why?

The Lalit Hotel is a brand new – to London – experience, offering comfort, health, wellness, culture and indulgence. It’s where culturally rich India meets quintessentially traditional Britain.

Try the…

Naanery. Yes, an eatery dedicated entirely to naan, celebrating contemporary twists on the traditional bread recipes of India. It includes an in-house iron Tandoor oven. A visit to the in-house ayurvedic, yoga, natural therapy treating spa should also not be missed.

Wash it down with…

Carefully selected wine pairings, or a cocktail under the elaborately decorated ceiling and paneled wall of the old Governor’s Room. Alternatively, enjoy al fresco.

How much will it cost?

Rooms start at £350 a night.

In their own words…

Keshav Suri, executive director of The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, said: “My family has a karmic connection with this city, in fact all of us have grown up or studied in London. My father passed away here in 2006 and since then my mother, Dr Suri, and I have wanted to fulfill his wish of owning a hotel in London and I am glad that is finally becoming a reality.”

In our own words…

As London’s first ever Indian-British hotel, it’s sure to be an interesting addition to the ever evolving, eclectic mix that is Bermondsey. We feel it might best be described as a Dishoom and Zetter Townhouse lovechild, one with a particular fondness for naan and cocktails.
