Strictly Ballroom: The Musical
If you’re a fan of Baz Luhrmann’s hilarious, glitzy and ultimately moving film Strictly Ballroom, then we’ve got some exciting news for you: it’s been adapted into a West End musical.
If you’re not familiar with the story then let us enlighten you… Scott Hastings is a young ballroom dancer with a bright future but when his dancing partner becomes injured he has to look for someone new to enter a dancing competition with. He ends up with Fran, a beginner with no steps to her name and a ‘look’ that isn’t right for ballroom. They cause lots of controversy by dancing together but ultimately overcome their differences; she blossoms into a great dancer and they both learn some lessons about life and love. Aww.
Jonny Labey (formerly of Eastenders) makes his West End debut in the role of Scott, alongside Zizi Strallen as Fran (fun fact: Zizi’s real name is Sylphide Charity Vaigncourt-Strallen). The singer Will Young also stars in the new role of bandleader Wally Strand.
Director and choreographer Drew McOnie is known for loads of huge shows including a groundbreaking production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, and we think this is going to be one of the smash hits of the summer. Grab a ticket, put on some sparkle and settle in to enjoy the show. And remember, the steps don’t need to be strictly ballroom…
