Sorella

OPENED January 20th, 2018

Sorella is an Amalfi-inspired Italian restaurant from the team behind The Dairy, now open in Clapham.

It’s occupying the space that was formerly The Manor, owned and run by the same people.

The Spot:

The team were searching for the perfect spot for this new venture for a while, but in the end, couldn’t find anything as perfect as the site then occupied by The Manor. It’s an elegant, stripped-back space that leaves the focus on the food.

The Food:

There’s a traditional Italian menu format happening here (cicchetti, antipasti, primi, secondi, dolci) and it’s heavily influenced by the ingredients available from the group’s own farm, so will swing with the seasons.

Start with some snacks like fried olives and crispy anchovies, then nibble on some cured meats like coppa, served with their own ‘farm pickles.’ Pasta (and gnocchi) primi look fantastic and currently include cep gnocchi with wild mushrooms, a pork and ‘nduja ragu with tagliatelle and a crab linguine. A short, solid selection.

There are a couple of larger dishes to choose from then, and we do mean just a couple: roasted pollock or venison with charred onions. Desserts are similarly restrained yet tempting: chocolate and fennel gelato, hay pannacotta and quince (this is, frankly, irresistible as an idea), and a malted barley affogato.

It’s a tight menu that’s thoughtful and impressive. If you just can’t decide, however, let them do it for you by choosing the four-course ‘chef’s menu’.

The Drinks:

There’s a gorgeous little aperitivi selection that deserves your attention, including the ever-present negroni, and some seasonal cocktails like a quince bellini. Get stuck into one of these while you nibble cicchetti.

The Damage:

Snacks are £3–4; antipasti £2.50–9; primi £12–13; secondi £17–22 and desserts around £7 at the time of writing. The chef’s menu is £45pp.

In a Nutshell:

We’re imagining this as a slightly more accessible version of Luca, the Clerkenwell Italian from the guys behind The Clove Club. It’s got more of a ‘neighbourhood’ than ‘destination’ vibe and we’re thoroughly miffed we don’t live closer.

Owner/chef Robin Gill said of the opening, ‘My time spent working in Campania in southern Italy has probably had the biggest impression on my approach to cooking. I was lucky enough to work at Don Alfonso 1890, a restaurant steeped in history and tradition that worked with ingredients coming from a farm overlooking Capri. I took Dean to this very special place during the summer and we became inspired for change. The ingredient-led approach has massively influenced all that we have done at The Dairy, Counter Culture and The Manor but Sorella will hone in on all that we love about the Italian attitude to cooking and eating.’
