Smoking Goat

OPENED October 27th, 2017

Thai restaurant Smoking Goat has opened a second branch in Shoreditch, this time focusing on Thai drinking food.

Ben Chapman is the chef and restaurateur behind these two restaurants, along with Kiln in Soho.

The Spot:

This building used to be a strip club but Ben has transformed it by working with the original 1930s concrete interior and a specialist woodworker.

The Food:

Chapman is known for his fanatical approach to ingredients, travelling extensively in Thailand to learn techniques and source unique and authentic flavours. Together with head chef and co-owner Ali Borer, he has come up with a menu focusing on ‘Aharn Glam Lao’ — food to eat while drinking.

There’s lots that’s skewered, grilled, wok-fried, or otherwise made into an excellent thing to nibble on while you sink a few bevvies. Those fish sauce wings are back, as are another version, this time dressed with added chilli sauce.

There’s a Northern Thai style duck larb, which is a fantastic salad of very finely chopped duck meat, loads of herbs, chilli and toasted ground rice; wild mussels with green mango and chilli; steamed oysters with roasted chilli; and Northern beef sausage. In short, it all sounds very inhalable.

Larger dishes include a barbecue goat turmeric massaman curry, which will be rich and smoky and is now something we want more than anything, including world peace or any Christmas presents. Ditto smoked brisket drunken noodles.

Side dishes all sound incredible too, like lardo fried rice, sambal aubergine and something called ‘Economy Curry’, which is very intriguing indeed.

The Drinks:

The man behind the wine list is Zeren Wilson (he is behind many a London list) and there’s a small selection of by-the-glass options from lesser-known regions. There’s also a range of ales, sours and pilsners and a selection of ‘forgotten’ spirits, like Umoshi plum wine, mezcals and Portuguese fig fire water. Yeah, it really is a pleasure palace.

In a Nutshell:

This is a restaurant that just screams fun. You’d have to be pretty determined not to have a good time. Ali Borer said of the opening, ‘The atmosphere that made Thailand’s late-night canteens so vibrant was in part because everything was so cheap; everyone goes for any and all occasion, tucked in elbow-to-elbow on plastic chairs. One of the things we’ve learnt doing Offal Mondays at Smoking Goat is that putting out menus that are really good value results in a room of people that are just happy – they eat a bit more, drink a bit more and that’s the kind of place we’re hoping to build over the years at Redchurch Street.’
