SMOKESTAK

OPENED November 01st, 2016

‘BEST OPENINGS OF 2016’ WINNER

SMOKESTAK, the nomadic barbecue offering, has just opened its first permanent site in Shoreditch.

First founded in 2013 by David Carter, SMOKESTAK is no newcomer to the barbecue scene. The Street Feasts regular has finally laid down roots among East London’s top restaurant offerings, close by fellow comfort food haven Dirty Bones.

Pushing barbecue boundaries

One trend among the other barbecue joints that launched this summer is their commitment to a ‘back to basics’ approach. However, SMOKESTAK has gone down a slightly different road, aiming to elevate standard barbecue fare. They’ve created new dishes like smoked girolles and beef dripping toast, as well as crispy beef shin and anchovy mayo.

Barbecue purists need not fear though; they still take a ‘cue from the classics. Amongst other staples are their brisket bun and pickled red chilli, and thick-cut pork ribs with pickled cucumber.

Feel like a bit of meat?

Now, this is a given for the meat-lovers amongst you (who will always feel like a bit of meat). But here we mean it in more ways than one.

Indeed, it’s no accident if the interiors here make you feel like you’re inside of a smoker – they were designed that way. There’s a utilitarian feel, courtesy of black carbon stained concrete walls, mild steel panelling, old workshop furnishings, and roller-shutter garage doors.

A two-metre wide charcoal grill sits at the entrance, while the wood-burning smoker takes centre stage. The subterranean bar resembles a hidden cellar, decked out in reclaimed Yorkshire pavement slabs, oak-beam supports, and candle lighting.

Don’t know about you, but we could get used to having barbecue all year round.

Our interactive map of London keeps track of the city’s best new restaurant and bar openings – it updates every week with the latest, so keep checking back.
