Smoke & Salt

OPENED 188 DAYS AGO

Smoke & Salt is a new site for the popular British restaurant, which focuses on ‘modern ingredients and ancient techniques’, this time in Pop Brixton.

Formerly located at Islington’s Chapel Bar and Platform 1, chefs Remi Williams and Aaron Webster have become known for their smart, modern, highly seasonal style.

The Spot:

It’s Pop Brixton, so obviously it’s inside a shipping container – this is the space that was once occupied by Kricket (now in Soho). They’ve still managed to pack 27 seats inside though and they’ve made the unusual, long space into something which feels much cosier and high-end.

That said, a few industrial touches nod to the container’s original use, in the form of bulkhead ship lights and a brass Plimsoll line – that’s a line on the outside of a cargo ship that shows when it’s properly loaded (bonus fact for you there).

The Food:

We’ve had great food at their previous locations. The food is highly seasonal and they’re all about the ‘ancient techniques’ which means lots of smoking, pickling and curing. You’ll find tons of lovely veg on the menu like broad beans with aioli and Hispi (London’s trendiest cabbage), served with pickled peanut and cold-smoked silken tofu.

We also love the sound of their tacos, which comes with trout fished from crystal clear chalk streams and a jalapeno and white onion salsa, and also a tartare of Merguez spiced lamb, served with grilled flatbread and yoghurt. Desserts include a London take on an Eton mess and a seasonal riff on jam doughnuts.

The Drinks:

There’s beer from the 40ft microbrewery in Dalston and just two Portuguese wines by the glass – one red, one white. There are a few cocktails too, including the intriguing Korean Meli, with kimchi, vodka and tomato juice – like a Korean play on a Bloody Mary.

The Damage:

Starters are £4-5, mains £6-9 and desserts around £5. Cocktails, and a glass of wine or a beer, all come in at £6-9.

In a Nutshell:

Smoke & Salt has become known for serving plates of elegant seasonal food in a set tasting menu. We’re really excited to see what these guys can do with a new lease of life in this location; we predict they’ll go from strength to strength.
