Scully

OPENED 232 DAYS AGO

Scully is the first restaurant from Ramael Scully, former head chef of Ottolenghi’s Nopi, now open in St. James’s Market.

The food is really interesting thanks to Scully’s mixed heritage, and this opening is sure to join the ranks of the most exciting restaurants in central London.

The Spot:

The bar is the first thing you’ll see as you walk through the door, then you’ll move through into the restaurant, which is dominated by a central, open kitchen.

The Food:

Scully is known for his exciting and unusual flavour combinations, which are a result of his mixed heritage and personal travels. He’s part Chinese, Indian, Balinese and Irish, and has been influenced by travels to the Middle East, Russia and Europe.

Example dishes include beet or carrot jerky with cashew nut cheese; arepa with eggplant sambal and bergamot labneh; candied butternut with cabbage sambal and apple shrub; octopus, salt-baked avocado and black garlic; and beef short-rib pastrami with horseradish and nasturtium. We told you it was interesting… we’re hugely intrigued by these dishes which have whispers of Nopi but also stand out as something completely new.

The Drinks:

There’s a regularly changing cocktail menus making use of shrubs made in-house, including a pandan daiquiri, made with white rum, pandan leaf and a cordial using leftover citrus husks used by the restaurant – sustainability is a big theme here.

Wines are from east London supplier (and bar) Newcomer Wines, who specialise in Eastern European wines. At Scully, they’re serving only their natural wines (those made with minimal intervention). Will this stand up to London’s best natural wine bars?

The Damage:

Dishes range from £4.50-16 and desserts are around £7.

In a Nutshell:

This is an exciting new restaurant for London which seems to blend vegetable-heavy dishes and vegan influences like cashew nut cheese with meat and fish dishes. It joins acclaimed West African restaurant Ikoyi in St. James’s Market – a destination to watch, for sure.
