Santa Maria Fitzrovia

OPENED 111 DAYS AGO

One of London’s very best pizza restaurants, Santa Maria, is now open in Fitzrovia.

The Neapolitan-style pizzeria is a very exciting addition to the area as one of London’s best pizzerias.

The Spot:

This is a bright, buzzy spot on New Cavendish Street, with a design inspired by central London’s Italian coffee bars in the 1960’s.

The Food:

This really is some of London’s best Neapolitan pizza, undoubtedly due to the fact that these guys are completely obsessive about sourcing ingredients and cooking pizzas.

They’ll only use San Marzano D.O.P tomatoes, for example, which are made in small quantities and must be pre-ordered from Italy in order to ensure a consistent supply. All their mozzarella and cured meats come from Italy, and their sausage is free-range and rare breed from North Yorkshire. Vegetables are locally sourced and seasonal.

We highly recommend giving that sausage a try in their meatballs, made with smoked mozzarella and served either with San Marzano tomato sauce and Parmesan or ‘nudja and ricotta.

With the pizzas, you cannot order badly. There are a couple of white options (no tomato sauce), like the Santa Poala with ‘nduja, mushrooms and sausage, and the San Daniele, with Parma ham, rocket and Parmesan. Then there’s a wider selection of meat and veg pizzas. Vegan options are also available.

If it’s your first time then you may want to stick with a Margherita, or go with someone else and swap halves of two different pizzas (our tried and tested pizza-eating strategy). The San Giuseppe with smoked mozzarella, sausage and wild broccoli is very tempting indeed…

The Drinks:

There’s a short, well-priced wine list and a couple of Champagnes, just in case you feel like taking your pizza experience to the next level (we are fully behind this approach).

The ubiquitous Negronis and spritzes are present too, of course, plus a selection of Italian after dinner drinks like Limoncello, Grappa and Sambuca.

The Damage:

Snacks, starters and sides range from £2.50-6.50 and pizzas are £7.50-11.95. A beer is £3.50-6.75 and a cocktail a very reasonable £6.50. Wines start at £17 for a bottle of house red or white.

In a Nutshell:

This independent pizza company started way out in Ealing and we’re very happy to see it reach central because, well, we don’t live in West London. It’s purely selfish. We also really admire their approach, though. This is a company that’s 100% independent and will go to any lengths to perfect their pizzas.

Owner Pasquale Chionchio says, ‘We go to the ends of the earth to make our pizzas perfect.  From the dough to the temperature of our handmade oven, to the order we place our ingredients on the dough, to the way we stretch the dough…you name it, we’ve thought about it!’
