ROVI

OPENED 276 DAYS AGO

Ottolenghi opens a new restaurant and bar, ROVI, in Fitzrovia.

Ottolenghi no longer needs an introduction – restaurant NOPI puts London on the map; the chef seamlessly shows vegetarian cooking can be just as exciting as nonveg; and sweet treats are certainly no afterthought (you only need to step inside one of Ottolenghi’s delis to realise that). His new restaurant, ROVI, differs slightly from what we’ve become accustomed to see, focusing on fermentation and cooking over fire. There’s a big chance ROVI will make it on our ultimate guide to Fitzrovia.

The Spot:

The design is decidedly louder than Ottolenghi’s other restaurants, fitted with red sofas and black chairs, while still featuring pale oak furnishings and tons of natural light. As you step inside, you’ll find counter top seating in the front and a large oval-shaped cocktail bar at the centre, which is surrounded by plenty of dining tables. If you can’t stay, ROVI comes with a small deli with salads and baked goods to take away.

The Food:

While the menu still revolves around vegetables, the food at ROVI is fermented and cooked over an open fire. Think potatoes smoked on top of hay; braised and smoked carrots with puffed black barley; and pan roasted cauliflower with za’atar onions. There’s more goodness on the counter menu (available for walk-ins), including green beans with roasted grapes and roasted sweet potato with spicy pumpkin seeds.

The Drinks:

Complementing the dishes, ROVI serves wines with earthy and smoky flavours, as well as cocktails made with seasonal spices.

The Damage:

Dishes are around £13.

In a Nutshell:

As expected, ROVI offers a beautiful menu of seasonal dishes, but there’s more to it than that. The restaurant is tackling a big problem in the industry, aiming to reduce waste where possible – chilli top and tomato skin vinegar will be made with leftover wine, while hasselback beetroots are cooked with used coffee grinds. As if we needed another reason to dine at ROVI…
