Pickled Fred

OPENED 22 DAYS AGO

Pickled Fred is a restaurant from Ben Lusty (formerly Som Saa) and cocktail specialist Can Turker (previously Hawksmoor and Berber & Q), now open in Shoreditch.

There are plenty of pickled and fermented foods, as the name suggests, and lots of Asian-inspired dishes alongside some pretty fun cocktails.

The Spot:

This cosy, 50-seat spot on Hanover Street has a buzzing bar that’s the centre of attention thanks to a striking wooden block design.

The Food:

Pickled and fermented foods feature heavily, as you’d expect from the name, and flavours are described as ‘Asian-inspired’, although we’re seeing some Middle Eastern influences, too. The menu is made up of snacks, small plates and flatbreads — which is something we’re seeing an increasing number of restaurants doing (James Cochran N1, we’re looking at you).

Some dishes are veggie or vegan, so there’s a jackfruit scotch egg on the snacks menu, albeit next to a pork and lemongrass sausage.

Small plates include beef shin and bone marrow rendang with pickled chillies and crispy shallots, or roasted cauliflower with ras el hanout, mustard oil, tahini, pomegranate and toasted pine nuts.

Flatbreads are topped with veggies and garnishes, with the option to add meat or seafood if you want it, so a spring onion pancake comes with sweet potato, crispy kale, cucumber, gochujang sauce and kimchi, with the option to add Korean bulgogi beef or lemongrass poached prawns.

Desserts come in the form of fritters (apple and sesame), ice cream or a coconut milk and turmeric panna cotta.

They’re also serving brunch, where you can order your eggs topped with za’atar, chilli butter and labneh, alongside Merguez sausage or morcilla — all on those flatbreads.

The Drinks:

It’s all about the cocktails here, and Can has come up with creations including the Fred’s Preserver, which is black pepper-infused vodka with preserved strawberry and rose petal wine, Suze and Aperol, and Smoking Goat — butter-washed Tequila, Mezcal, pineapple, sweet basil, and agave.

The Damage:

Snacks are £2.50-6, small plates £7-9 and flatbreads £7-10.

In a Nutshell:

This is a super trendy spot from two hip young industry names and we’re excited to see how it pans out for them. We also wonder: will plates ever be full size again?
