Parsons

OPENED 12 DAYS AGO

Parsons is a seafood and shellfish restaurant with a big focus on wine, now open in Covent Garden.

It’s just over the road from The 10 Cases, a wine bar and bistro owned by the same people.

The Spot:

This cosy spot has room for just 32 and has a lovely classic pie and mash/chip shop feel thanks to the white tiles and mirrors lining the walls.

The Food:

There’s a selection of snacks and starters, then the main fish dishes of the day are chalked up on a specials board. Of the snacks, we can’t wait to get our hands on the brown crab pissaladière, a genius take on the pizza-like flatbread usually crisscrossed with anchovies and olives. Potted shrimp croquettes are a must-order, too.

A clam chowder tempts from the starters section, as does octopus with pork fat potatoes, paprika and parsley oil, a riff on the classic Spanish dish pulpo a la gallega. We’re also very intrigued by the idea of cauliflower aioli, served with a dish of black rice and squid.

The main fish dishes change, depending on what’s come in that day, so keep those peepers directed at the specials board. From the sides, lobster mash and pork and seaweed chipolatas sound unmissable.

The Drinks:

As we said, this is from the guys behind 10 Cases, so the focus is on wine, and it’s really good to see a seafood restaurant taking their white wines so seriously rather than wheeling out the same tired classics. We’ll take the great value Champalou Vouvray for starters, the Wittman Weissburgunder with our clam chowder, and maybe we’ll splash out with a bottle of Agrapart’s 7 Crus with whatever looks good on the daily board.

The Damage:

Snacks are £3-8; starters £6.50-10.50 and mains priced individually on the day. Wines by the glass start at £4 and bottles in the low twenties.

In a Nutshell:

Covent Garden is not the restaurant wasteland it once was. We remember when finding a decent bite here meant elbowing your way into Rules and saying goodbye to a month’s rent or choosing the least horrible option from a selection of chains. No more. This is just the latest in a clutch of really exciting openings and… more seafood! We asked co-owner Ian Campbell: why the fishy focus? He told us, ‘It’s because Will and I have always loved fish restaurants, whether it be a seaside shack or a grand, established restaurant. It builds into the theory that if you want to find the beating heart of a foreign city, head to an oyster bar.’
