Coffee at Over Easy in Mayfair, London.

Over Easy: Review

Some people think ‘brunch’ is an unnecessary term, much like ‘spork,’ ‘maltipoo,’ ‘Brangelina’ (sorry – still hurts), and other trendy mash-ups. While we can’t claim any linguistic expertise, we’re firmly in favour of the brunch scene, if only because it produces so many top-notch restaurants and cafes. One such eatery is Over Easy, a daytime restaurant that, in their own words, “takes brunch very seriously.”

Breakfast at Over Easy in London.

Located in bright and busy Marylebone, on Duke Street, Over Easy does classic breakfast dishes all day long. Expect thick slices of toast, steaming cups of coffee, perfectly cooked eggs dripping with cheese – and a few daytime cocktails just to round the meal out.

Melbourne meets North America: Over Easy is inspired by the cafe and brunch culture of these diverse places. Although it’s located in one of London’s busiest areas, this restaurant provides all the sunny, small-town charm you could ask for, offering the chance to have a relaxed outdoor brunch away from the usual hustle and bustle.

Let’s start with the food: for brunch, we had by far the most exciting plate of eggs Benedict we’ve ever eaten, with crab and passionfruit. We were wary about trying this dish – it’s not a combination of flavours we’ve come across before – but with risk came great reward.

The huevos rancheros are an excellent choice, as well, with a light and fresh taste rather than the heavier take you’ll usually find.

Over Easy has drinks for any occasion and time of day, too. In the morning, start with their coffee, sourced from Allpress Espresso and expertly brewed. For midday, we can vouch for the green tea; this will give your body a chance to rest up before you pump it with caffeine again, because coffee-lovers will not want to skip the espresso martini. If you’re not a coffee person, take the bloody mary instead – perfectly spiced, it’s just the right way to kick off your evening.

If the food hadn’t been enough to win us over, the friendly and helpful service we received would’ve done the trick. Our server also provided some winning suggestions, like the espresso martini we would’ve otherwise missed out on. It’s a good sign when the people working at a place seem to enjoy their job, and it always makes for a better experience.

Style & Decor

The look and feel of Over Easy says “clean, casual and fun.” The white subway tiles, the menu scrawled on the chalkboard, and the clusters of flowers in the center of each table make for a comfortable, homey atmosphere.

Verdict: 4/5

There’s a lot to love about Over Easy; we have nothing but good things to say about the food, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality and location. It’s nice enough to bring your family or partner, but easygoing enough for a meal with friends or a solo lunch. Swing by for one of their fresh pastries or settle in for an indulgent weekend brunch – you won’t be disappointed.
