Orange Buffalo at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen

OPENED 8 DAYS AGO

Orange Buffalo have taken up residency at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen.

They’re serving their brilliant buffalo wings at the East London bar, with up to 50% off food for the two-week soft launch period (see our fact box for details).

The Spot:

They’re cooking in the kitchen of Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen, which is — no surprises here guys — on Hoxton Square.

Orange Buffalo made a name for themselves as a street food vendor, their truck parked just off Brick Lane. We’d often swing past for a tray of orange beauties whenever… well, whenever we passed by to be perfectly honest.

Thing was, it all got a bit uncomfortable when it rained, or got cold. Or both. So, we’re very pleased to see them serving their wings at a venue with a roof (you can still visit the Brick Lane stall, don’t worry).

The Food:

What’s different about these wings? It’s all in the sauce. A standard buffalo wing sauce is made with Frank’s Hot Sauce and melted butter, but these guys make their own, which sets them apart. They’re not the only place to do that in London, but it does mean they have complete control over the flavour, and the flavour is very good indeed.

There are 6 spice levels to choose from, so you might want to get there early if you’re the indecisive type. The mildest is their Original Tangy Sauce (made with Dutch chillies) but we’re partial to the Woof Woof, made with Dutch chillies, scotch bonnets and a little bit of Naga for a sting in the tail.

If you’re the kind of person that likes surprises, you’ll need to get the ‘Snake in a Basket’, which is a white-knuckle Russian roulette situation: a mixture of Original and Woof Woof wings, with one coated in Viper sauce — the spiciest they serve. Be sure to order an ‘anti-venom’ — a serving of milk ice cream — to soothe the inevitable pain.

Sides include the ever-brilliant curly fries (we are always suspicious of people who don’t like curly fries), plus deep fried pickles and onion rings.

The Drinks:

It’s a residency, so you’ll be buying your drinks from the Hoxton Square Bar, where they like to go big on the cocktails.

The Damage:

At lunchtime, six wings or a sandwich plus a beer will set you back £5, and from 5pm the evening menu kicks in, when a basket of wings is £8. Everything is 50% off during the soft launch.

In a Nutshell:

These are some of London’s best buffalo wings and although we love the traditional Frank’s & butter style, these make a great case for deviating from that standard. Get yourself over there, work your way through the sauces and give yourself a pat on the back for living your life like a winner.
