Ooty

OPENED 37 DAYS AGO

Indian restaurant Ooty replaces Galvin Bistro de Luxe in Marylebone.

The latest addition to London’s Baker Street, Ooty focuses on South Indian cooking with a seasonally changing menu.

The Spot:

Ooty might take inspiration from India’s station town, but the restaurant is everything you would expect in London’s upmarket Marylebone. The fine-dining room combines deep green banquets and pink chairs with copper accents, while the basement bar is home to the Ooty Club and Station, a casual dining space and cocktail bar set to open later this year. They say casual, but it’s all relative.

The Food:

Chef Manmeet Singh Bali (of Vineet Bhatia London) brings a modern take to South Indian cuisine found in traditional house kitchens, offering a balanced menu of fish, meat and vegetable-based dishes. To start, there’s Tellicherry crab fry with coconut crab relish and tomato chutney, Goan chicken cafrael with cucumber rolls, and almond pea cake with wasabi chutney and asparagus shavings. Mains bring in classics and dishes from the griddle, including Guinea fowl Biryani, masala dosa with crushed new potato, and char-grilled fennel lamb shoulder.

The Drinks:

Head to Ooty Club for cocktails, infused with India’s traditional teas and spices.

The Damage:

Starters and vary from £12 to £21, mains cost anything between £18 and £33; sides are priced at £3-£8.

In a Nutshell:

While London is flooded with Indian establishments, fine-dining-meets-ever-so-slightly casual spot  Ooty aims to bring something new to the scene – beyond onion bhajis and chicken curries.
