Oded Oren at Borough Wines & Beers

OPENED 67 DAYS AGO

Oded Oren is the new chef in residence at Borough Wines and Beers, from 12th October, until the 21st.

Oded follows in the footsteps of Fodder (now at Platform 1 in East Dulwich) and Adam Rawson.

The Spot:

We’ve told you about this before, but basically there’s a regularly changing line up of chefs who cook at the Islington branch of Borough Wines & Beers (they’ve actually got loads of shops around London).

The Food:

We became fans of Oded’s food when he was cooking at Louie Louie on Walworth Road, which is the road between Elephant & Castle and Camberwell. It’s a trendy (dare we say, hipster) brunch spot, which is a little incongruous in its current location but won’t be in a few years time once development creeps in from either side.

There, he cooked in his own Mediterranean style, with loads of Middle Eastern influences, and this menu is similar. It’s five courses of joy, starting with bread and moving onto a fresh take on the beetroot salad (we’ve all had enough beet and goats’ cheese to last a lifetime, right?) — this time they’re charred and served with sour cream.

There’s crispy seabass with smoked tomatoes next, and then grilled squid with warm chickpeas and tahini, served in a home made pitta which we guarantee will blow your socks off compared to those sad leathery flip flops you buy in the shops.

Beef cheek comes with baharat, a Middle Eastern spice mix and roasted freekeh with herbs. Finish the meal with cardamom panna cotta with spiced quince. HELLO. It all sounds brilliant.

The Drinks:

You know the deal by now — it’s drinks purchased separately from Borough Wines & Beers, which is fair enough. They are hosting a special winemaker dinner on 13th October though — Faouzi Issaw is coming over from Domaine des Tourelles, a Lebanese winery producing some amazing wines. You’ll be seeing a lot more from this region on lists in the next few years.

The Damage:

Set menu situation so it’s all very simple: £42 for a five course menu or £57 for a five course menu and wine tasting flight.

In a Nutshell:

Oded is definitely one to watch. We suggest you take this opportunity to try his food, because he’s going to be on hot lists before you know it.
