Nuala

OPENED 302 DAYS AGO

Nuala is an Irish bar and restaurant now open on City Road near Old Street.

This isn’t your average Irish bar. Founded by Niall Davidson, formerly of Chiltern Firehouse, this is a very modern take on the concept.

The Spot:

There’s a bar downstairs where you can hide away in a snug, or perch at the bar and wrap your ears around some Irish music. The restaurant upstairs is bright and modern, with sleek banquettes and wicker chairs.

The Food:

This is very much a modern British and Irish menu, full of classic flavours. O’Neill’s this ain’t.

The menu is full of glorious little surprises, so langoustines are served with dulce (seaweed) butter, veal sweetbreads with a cauliflower rarebit, and tartare with beer sauce, a smoked egg yolk and fries.

There are larger sharing dishes too, including king crab with smoked Pernod butter, suckling pig with cabbage and bacon and rotisserie goose with greengage chutney and barley pancakes.

It’s warming, rib-sticking comfort food with a sophisticated twist.

The Drinks:

Spencer Large, previously at Barbacoa, is in charge of the bar, which focuses on cocktails, wine and whiskey.

The cocktails are fun, including the very Irish ‘The Straight Up Serve’, made with Greenspot Irish whiskey, Guinness and Black House vermouth, and the very intriguing ‘The Highball Serve’, containing Bertha’s Revenge gin, fino sherry, orgeat, parsnip, green apple, gentian and tarragon.

The wine list is pretty solid, too, cleverly covering all bases with the classics, lots of funky naturals and a load of great looking wines under £35.

Oh, and there’s Guinness, too, of course.

The Damage:

Snacks are £2.50–3.50; starters are £7–12 and main courses £14.50–18. Those sharing dishes, like the suckling pig, start at £26, rising to £95 for the goose.

Cocktails are £13 each, beers start at £4.75 and wines by the glass start at £5. A bottle starts at £23.

In a Nutshell:

We think this is a stroke of genius – an update for the Irish bar and restaurant that goes beyond chain pubs and rowdy bars in tourist resorts. We also love that the restaurant looks as strong as the bar, with lots of bold flavours and ingredients that make us restaurant addicts swoon.
