Neptune

Neptune is a new seafood restaurant inside the recently opened Principal Hotel in Bloomsbury.

It comes from Brett Redman and Margaret Crow, also behind The Richmond in Hackney. Will it become one of London’s best seafood restaurants?

The Spot:

The Grade II-listed dining room is gorgeous, with a wooden floor, peach ceiling and shiny pewter-topped bar in the centre of the room. On the walls hang a series of changing artworks — first up are paintings from emerging artist George Ruoy, known for his hypnotic, dreamlike figurative paintings.

The Food:

The menu is a celebration of seafood, with a central oyster and seafood bar displaying fresh shellfish. Lots of towering seafood platters wind their way around the restaurant, and there’s an à la carte menu to choose from, too.

A signature dish is the steamed-to-order Cornish crab with spaghetti, Datterini tomatoes, Vietnamese basil and long pepper sauce. Also on the menu are dishes like steamed clams with buttermilk dressing and dill granita, wild Cornish mussels with a saffron, orange and bay leaf sofrito, and scallops carpaccio with ajo blanco and nori.

The Drinks:

Cocktails have been designed to complement the shellfish so you’ll find more nimble takes on classic cocktails, including a gin-based sazerac called Light Side of the Moon; we’re also particularly intrigued by a cucumber and absinthe daiquiri called Green Martian.

The wine list focuses on natural wines and has been written by Isabelle Legeron; it comprises wines from small-scale quality producers alongside grower Champagnes. In addition, there is an ‘island wines’ section featuring bottles from Corsica, Santorini, Sicily, Sardinia and Tenerife.

In a Nutshell:

This is a swish opening inside a five-star hotel and we can’t wait to immerse ourselves in the glamour. A fresh seafood bar is always so tempting, particularly in summer and we can see ourselves whiling away many an hour at that pewter bar, cocktail in one hand, oyster fork in the other.
