Mr Ji

OPENED 19 DAYS AGO

Mr Ji is a Taiwanese-style fried chicken pop-up, open in Camden Town until 10th December.

The pop-up has been founded by two friends who discovered this style of fried chicken while in Taiwan; they named the restaurant after their nickname for the man who introduced them to it.

The Spot:

This is on the stretch between Camden Town and Euston, which is in definite need of more decent restaurants and fried chicken that isn’t endlessly questionable.

The Food:

Taiwanese fried chicken is found in the famous street food night markets of Taiwan. It’s different to the fried chicken we’re used to in London because the meat is diced or butterflied (rather than left as whole breasts, legs or wings).

It’s coated in a blend of spices, and then deep-fried until crisp. Traditionally, it’s cooked using oil at two separate temperatures: a hot oil to create a crust, then a lower temperature oil to cook the meat through.

They’re using free-range chicken at Mr Ji (this should be standard practice for anywhere new, surely?), and it comes in a few sizes. There’s the Big Ji, which is a breast, butterflied and flattened, presumably so that it cooks quickly and doesn’t dry out. Then there are the Mini Ji’s, which are thighs that have been cooked bitesize. All the meat is marinated in their combination of garlic, ginger and five spice.

Wings are available too – Mr Ji’s Chicken Tips are seasoned with seven spice powder, plus your choice of flavourings (cayenne, ketchup, BBQ, curry, or Mr Ji’s secret mix) for splattering across tables, sucking from fingers and generally getting all over your face. What? Oh, just us?

If you don’t want fried chicken (we imagine that does happen to some people), then they’re serving a chicken soup made in a hot and sour style, plus there are sweet potato doughnuts for pudding.

The Drinks:

The Taiwanese like to drink cold herbal tea with their fried chicken as the tannic freshness bites right through the fat from the fryer. Here, there’s jasmine, blood orange and hibiscus, or oolong, lemon and honey varieties, plus the option to level up with a shot of whisky should you so desire.

In a Nutshell:

Londoners love fried chicken but it’s been a while since we’ve seen the Taiwanese style (Good Friends Chicken – formerly BigBe – in Chinatown is the most recent opening of note). We reckon this is going to hit the spot and we hope it’s practice for a more permanent spot.
