Mariage Frères

OPENED 66 DAYS AGO

France’s luxury tea company Mariage Frères opens a tea emporium in Covent Garden.

Favoured by haute couture fashion houses, supermodels and celebrities, Mariage Frères has become somewhat of an institution in Paris and beyond. And while you can find their teas in London department stores like Selfridges, it’s not quite the same as roaming the streets of Le Marais, where Mariage Frères was founded back in 1854.

Mariage Frères - tea

The Spot:

Taking over a grand, five-storey (!) Georgian townhouse in Covent Garden, the UK’s first tea emporium is well worth the wait. The ground floor is home to an expansive tea emporium, complete with the world’s longest tea wall (impressive) and 1000 varieties of teas displayed apothecary-style in antique black canisters (we’re lost for words at this point). And well, the first floor offers a full dining experience that is likely to be everyone’s cup of tea (pun intended). Named fittingly “Musée du Thé”, the second floor is like a little museum with tea antiques from around the world, from pewter tea boxes to Chinese furniture made of teapots. And for all your exclusive tea parties, the third and fourth floors is fitted with two private rooms.

Mariage Frères - dessert

The Food:

Yes, it’s more than just a good cuppa; head chef Felix Richard brings you breakfast to dinner and everything in between (like afternoon tea, obviously). But tea takes center stage in the kitchen too, serving dishes such as seared beef tartar with coriander and Lune Rouge tea, and Vert Provence tea with shrimp and orange zest, chickpeas and pomegranate glaze. For dessert, your dark chocolate gateau gets a fancy, fine-dining-style upgrade. Besides a touch of Black Magic tea, it’s wrapped in a gold leaf with a Fleur de Sel caramel core and red currant coulis.

The Drinks:

Mariage Frères offers the largest collection of teas in the world, from vintage varieties to fruit favourites and more unique harvests. There’s even a special Marco Polo blend available.

The Damage:

This isn’t your average tea, so it’s going to cost you a little more than your store-cupboard supply.  Teas range from £5 to £110 (per 100 grams).

In a Nutshell:

Mariage Frères is the UK’s first tea emporium, which is kind of odd when you think about it. Then again, when you look at Mariage Frères’ selection of teas and tea-focused menu, you start to question everything you knew about the British favourite. Oh and for their soft opening (Sept 14-Sept 21), you can dine at the tea emporium with 50% off your food.
