Lucky & Joy

OPENED 137 DAYS AGO

Lucky & Joy is a pop up which celebrates food from the many regions of China, inspired by the founders’ travels around the country.

It’s open as a residency on Cambridge Heath Road and follows two successful pop ups in Tottenham and Hackney’s Institute of Light.

The Spot:

Lucky & Joy is housed inside a railway arch, decked out with the pink lighting that’s become a signature look, plus lots of kitsch flowers which contrast the existing industrial features.

It’s open late at the weekend as a party spot with live DJs and also during the day for calming rice bowls, so think of this as your 24-hour saviour.

The Food:

This is multi-regional Chinese food, so you’ll find lamb ribs smothered in cumin from the Xinjiang region of China, where lots of sheep roam the mountains and the large Muslim population make use of the spices which once arrived at this important stop on the Silk Road.

There are dishes that use the numbing peppercorns and dried red chillies favoured in Sichuan, and potatoes cooked in the style of X’ian.

From further in the South of China, there are dishes which make use of tea leaves, such as tea leaf salad, and steamed fish with black beans.

The Drinks:

The most exciting development here is the news of the bar next door, called New Leaf, which is inspired by the bars found in the alleyways of Beijing.

Here, neon lighting clashes with Chinese lanterns and cocktails delve into the Asian larder with ingredients like spicy Togarashi rice seasoning featuring in a yuzu and sake slushee (HELLO) and grilled peach margaritas (again).

In a Nutshell:

This is a really exciting pop up; we’ve seen some regional Chinese restaurants in recent years but we’ve not seen one that combines them all.
