Lazarus, an intriguing, hallucinatory musical co-written by the dearly departed music icon David Bowie, has hit London this autumn after premiering in New York and having a sell-out run.

Inspired by Walter Tevis’ book ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’, the 1976 film adaptation of which Bowie starred in, Lazarus is an absolute must for Bowie fans.

David Bowies Back Catalogue

Though Bowie had many attempts at dramatic work throughout his career, this is the first time any theatrical work from the late singer is being shown on a London stage, and viewers can also get to hear three unreleased songs, No Plan, Killing a Little Time and When I Met You. The production also showcases much musical mastery from Bowie’s back catalogue, which spans an incredible four and a half decades.

Lazarus London 1

The title song, Lazarus, opens with the line ‘Look up here, I’m in heaven’ which is taken from Bowie’s last album that was released to the public just days before he passed away.

It was always a dream of Bowie’s to be a creator of musicals for the West End and Broadway, and the music icon finally was able to see his ambition become a reality as he made his last public appearance at the New York premiere of Lazarus last December.

Lazarus London 2

The Man Who Fell To Earth

The play is a stage resurrection of the character Bowie played in ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’, telling the story of a human-looking alien (Newton) who comes to earth unable to die. It is a highly expressive production following Newton across a number of days as the arrival of a similar lost soul brings the promise to finally set him free.

Coming to rely on this remarkable stranger, but haunted by a past love and alcoholism, Newton searches for a way out. Lazarus is a gripping and imaginative production, and a true theatrical journey.
