Kêu Soho

OPENED

“Banh Mi” may not be words you’re familiar with, but the concept behind them is easy enough. It means ‘bread’ in Vietnamese, and we were first introduced to the traditional Vietnamese food by restauranteur Hieu Bui at Kêu Shoreditch. Different kinds of Kêu range from buns to near footlong baguettes. Hieu Bui is now launching a second cafe in Soho, having realised east London’s pang for Vietnamese food, served in a recognisable and functional way, was about to go viral.

There’s bowls too, if you’re up for sitting in, but mostly, Kêu is a simple Vietnamese bun and sandwich concept which are filled with slabs of meat and set against well-adorned seasonal fillings. Pork belly is popular, as is ground beef, fleshed out with tofu, cashews and coconut in sandwiches, or to eat in as curries. Elsewhere in London, we hear there’s a grilled cheese sandwich trend afoot – our odds are on Kêu Soho’s Vietnamese baps racing (and beating those guys) to the finish.
