Kanishka

OPENED 165 DAYS AGO

Atul Kochhar launches a new restaurant in Mayfair: Kanishka.

The first Indian chef in the world to receive a Michelin star – right here at Tamarind– chef Atul Kochhar has made quite a name for himself. Now, a few years, media appearances and some more Michelin stars later, he’s partnered with Tina English to bring a different type of Indian food to London.

The Spot:

Situated on Mayfair’s Maddox Street, Kanishka highlights Indian cuisine from the lesser-known regions, focusing on the Seven Sister States. That means the menu comes with lots of unknown, difficult-to-pronounce dishes like Kachela Maas and Samundri Khazana Alleppey, served in a setting that feels just as unusual. Who needs a doorman when you can have topiary elephants greeting you instead?

The Food:

Marrying the cooking methods of the states with seasonal British ingredients, the menu includes Sikkim-inspired with mustard oil mayonnaise, naan croutons and onions (Kachela Maas), pan-seared seafood with smoked cabbage poriyal (Samundri Khazana Alleppey), and chocolate Rasmalai (a traditional Indian treat featuring alternating layers of sponge and chocolate mousse). Let’s just say, you need to try it all before passing judgment.

The Drinks:

Kanishka might have a Michelin-starred chef cooking in the kitchen, but drinks deserve just as much attention. Expect your Old Fashioned made with tandoor-roasted banana and cinnamon, Mezcal served alongside tomato broth, and last but not least “Kanishka’s World of Imagination”, allowing you to create your own highball drink with all the spirits, spice (and everything nice).

The Damage:

You’re mixing your own cocktails at a fine-dining destination in Mayfair – the damage is unavoidable. Just kidding. Kanishka offers two to three courses for around £24-£29, or a tasting menu priced at £120 per person (including wine). Maybe I wasn’t kidding.

In a Nutshell:

A world-famous Indian chef has returned to London’s restaurant scene, Kanishka is arguably the most exciting opening of this year, so far.
