James Cochran N1

OPENED 8 DAYS AGO

James Cochran N1 is the second site for the chef’s eponymous Caribbean and Scottish fusion restaurant, open in Islington from 5pm today.

James once worked at two-Michelin starred The Ledbury restaurant in Notting Hill, and his food has received widespread critical acclaim.

The Spot:

The design here is modern and casual, with graphic prints on the walls and shared, canteen-style tables. There’s an open kitchen too, of course. You know the drill by now.

The Food:

James makes exciting food that is accessible and fun, yet impressive, with its fusion of Caribbean and Scottish influences. The menu is split into snacks and a range of flatbreads that sound simple but have enough cheffy flair to make them interesting.

Snacks, for example, include éclairs, which are stuffed with crab meat and there’s a bowl of crispy chicken skin that comes with a pardon pepper mayonnaise. James’s jerk chicken is also on the menu here; it became famous thanks to critic Fay Maschler, who described it as ‘better even than Chick’n’Sours’.

We love that there is a range of flatbreads with different toppings (no less than six) – very Black Axe Mangal. We’ll have the black garlic flatbread with hay baked lamb shoulder, burnt lemon yoghurt, bread and butter pickles, crispy shallots and paprika, thanks. That said, they all sound stunning. The question is, do you roll them up and take a bite or eat them like a pizza, in slices?

There’s dessert too, and we think the doughnuts are going to be a huge hit, hot from the fryer and given the salted caramel treatment.

The Drinks:

The drinks list is rather unremarkable, which is a shame considering the care and attention that’s gone into the food. We’ll be sticking to one of the IPAs.

The Damage:

Snacks are £3-7, flatbreads £12-18 and desserts £5-8. A bottle of wine starts at £18 for a basic red and beers start at £4.

In a Nutshell:

This is a second casual restaurant from a chef used to working in far flashier kitchens. We’re excited to see how he continues to apply his knowledge to this menu, which feels a lot like clever bar food (in the best possible way).
