High Mood Food

OPENED June 18th, 2018

High Mood Food arrives at Old Spitalfields Market.

Following the success of the first café in Marylebone, High Mood Food launches a second site inside The Kitchens at Old Spitalfields Market with the same mission, providing healthy fast-casual food to Londoners on-the-go.

The Spot:

Founder Ursel Barnes – an executive coach – and chef Joey O’Hare – MasterChef The Professionals alum, known for her work with vegetables – take a dual approach to their café, combining holistic wellbeing with culinary expertise. While High Mood Food is a fast-casual café, the menu consists of “slow food” to improve gut-health, from soaking and activating nuts to fermenting vegetables.

The Food:

Designed by chef O’Hare, the vegetarian menu includes three vegetable-centric bowls, such as “Tempeh-ting” with teriyaki roasted tempeh, pea and basil cake, roasted broccoli, green vegan kimchi and miso-tahini dressing. Smaller dishes include their signature biotic egg pot (two organic eggs, curried coleslaw kraut and white miso mayonnaise) and oats with apple and a dollop of coconut yogurt. Sweet treats are low in sugar and therefore definitely guilt-free, including buckwheat banana bread, fudgey brownies and carrot cake cookies – all served with vanilla labneh and salted maple caramel if you want.

The Drinks:

High Mood Food serves kombucha, smoothies and cold-pressed juices, such as the “Zanzero” with apple, ginger, lemon and thyme.

The Damage:

Dishes vary between £5 and £8; sweet treats are £3.

In a Nutshell:

Using nothing but seasonal produce, fermented foods and beneficial live bacteria, High Mood Food is definitely one of the healthiest cafés to hit Old Spitalfields Market. Healthy fast-casual food seems to be on the rise in London, following the openings of By Chloe in Covent Garden and Tower Bridge.
