Helix and Iris

OPENED 349 DAYS AGO

The Gherkin introduces London to a new dining and drinking destination – Helix and Iris.

Searcys are no strangers to beautiful buildings, so to find them relaunching the 39th and 40th floors of Norman Foster’s Gherkin as a bar and restaurant offering shouldn’t be a surprise. Previously a members’ club, now we mere mortals will be able to enjoy the Gherkin’s 360 degree views by booking lunch or dinner at Helix (39th), or drinks at Iris, above.

Helix and Iris - Gherkin interior

The Spot:

Interiors take somewhat of a backseat against the impressive cityscape beaming in at you from all angles, but for what it’s worth, Helix uses a slick city-style palette of black and silver for a modern and sophisticated vibe. Iris has a slightly softer feel, with brushed metallics and plenty of geometric detailing harking back to the architecture to remind you where you are.

The Food:

Searcys have drafted in executive chef Daniel Loftin (formerly Royal House London and Peninsula) to showcase the best ingredients the British Isles has to offer, keeping a strong emphasis on seasonality and sustainability. Expect salmon from the Queen’s warrant in Scotland, Rhug Estate Welsh lamb and modern cooking such as English asparagus, Dorset crab, grapefruit, soy and sesame. You can either dine à la carte or enjoy a tasting menu.

The Drinks:

Though Searcys is synonymous with champagne, the bars here pride themselves on their English sparkling wine offering too. But it’s cocktails you should plump for here; head mixologist Federico Geniale has drawn up a London-inspired list of tipples including the Brixton Pound (a Caribbean take on an Old Fashioned featuring tonka bean molasses) and the Hibiscus Mint Tea (a mint vodka and Earl Grey concoction inspired by the cultures in Edgware Road).

The Damage:

The six-course tasting menu costs £75 (another £65 for accompanying wines), otherwise starters are priced in the mid-teens, with mains ranging from £18-£32. Cocktails come in around £13 a pop.

In a Nutshell:

In a neighbourhood of sky-high drinks and dining offerings, Helix and Iris will have a point to prove. But with its menu of well-sourced, local produce and cooking that strays occasionally from the norm of the City (crispy pig’s head with nduja, pecorino and apple, anyone?) combined with a promising cocktail menu – not to mention the novelty of booking the Gherkin – it might just do it.
