The Good Egg Kingly Court

OPENED 17 DAYS AGO

Israeli-inspired restaurant The Good Egg have opened their second branch in Soho’s Kingly Court.

There’s an exciting all-day menu, in-house bakery and cocktails inspired by the late night bar scene in Tel Aviv.

The Spot:

The Good Egg joins Darjeeling Express, Wright Bros, Pizza Pilgrims and others in Kingly Court – some prime restaurant real estate.

The Food:

There’s an in-house bakery and pitta oven, where they make proper, round, soft Israeli-style pitta (not those awful oval flip flops you get in the supermarket), and an on-site smoker for salmon, which is pretty cool. There’s also a mangal grill, which means cooking over charcoal. It’s fair to say they’re ticking all our boxes.

The Stoke Newington branch is famous for its brunch and they’ve brought a lot of morning dishes to this menu too. There’s a brisket hash with caramelised onions, Russian dressing, pickles and a fried egg on top, and a sabich, which is an Israeli sandwich made with fried aubergines, a mango sauce called amba, pickles and a green herb sauce called zhoug. It’s one of our all-time favourite sandwiches. We’ve yet to try their French toast sandwich with peach jam, candied pecans and crème fraîche, however…

From that bakery, there is babka and challah, both beautiful, sweet, enriched-dough breads.  They’re also making their own North American-inspired bagels, and manoush, a flatbread that’s usually spread with za’atar and sometimes other toppings – in this case, honey.

It’s eat in from the all-day menu, or you can take away their sandwiches, bagels and salads.

The Drinks:

Anyone who has been to Tel Aviv will know that the nightlife there is world class, and this is where they’ve taken their inspiration for the bar. There’s a Michelada, a long drink made with Tel Aviv Dancing Camel Lager, horseradish and preserved lime, and an espresso martini with cardamom syrup (made in house) and green pistachio.

In a Nutshell:

We are very pleased to see these guys expanding. The recipes are developed from those handed down to co-owner Oded Mizrachi by his family and it’s fantastic to see them come to life. Even better to eat them, of course.

Co-owner Joel Braham said of the opening, ‘Over the last two years we’ve been on this incredible ride in Stoke Newington, from developing [co-owner] Oded’s age-old family recipes, to our pastrami we’ve spent years tweaking after we first tried it in Montreal; we’ve travelled all over Israel and North America and eaten more babka than we should really admit to… Opening a bigger home in Kingly Court will allow us to take all of that and then some, and pour it into every corner – I can’t wait.’
