Fare Bar + Canteen

OPENED 12 DAYS AGO

The guys behind Sager + Wilde launch a new all-day destination in Old Street: Fare Bar + Canteen is now open.

Fare Bar + Canteen is an ambitious multifunctional concept, home to a grab-and-go coffee area, restaurant and cocktail and wine bar. Now where do we go first?

The Spot:

Well, as the award-winning duo – Michael Sager and Marcis Dzelzainis  – run the highly celebrated Hackney wine bar, drinks are a good place to start. Take your pick of coffee-infused cocktails in the canteen, located on the ground floor with an eye-catching open kitchen, or head downstairs for 250 different wines and cutting-edge cocktails. They’ve created their own special tonic water, which is supposedly lighter in taste and brings spirits to a whole new level.

The Food:

But the downstairs dining area demands attention too, where Thomas Raymond (of Ellory) offers an on-trend menu with modern Mediterranean dishes. Small plates include pumpkin with smoked potatoes, warm beetroot doused in blue cheese, and pickled carrots accompanied by yoghurt butter. Mains revolve around the grill, bringing you options such as barbecue chicken skewers or slow-roasted lamb shoulder to share.

The Drinks:

In the canteen, take a seat around the marble counter and enjoy drinks such as nitro vodka espresso (poured like Guinness), or an updated take on the Piña Colada, made with Havana 3 year, coconut, verjus and lemongrass hydrosol. The wine list is obviously on par with Sager + Wilde standards.

The Damage:

Small plates cost around £8-£12; mains vary between £14 and £17.

In a Nutshell:

Fare Bar + Canteen is designed to lure Londoners in, offering a never-ending menu of boutique-bought wines; forward-thinking cocktails; and a Mediterranean meal that feels comforting yet healthy at once. When can we move in? Sooner rather than later, because they are offering 50% off your food bill until November 10.
