Elystan Street

OPENED September 26th, 2016

‘BEST OPENINGS OF 2016’ WINNER

Elystan Street has just been opened by Chef Phil Howard, in partnership with Rebecca Mascarenhas. One of the best new restaurants in West London, it is the third spot to be launched by the pair who already own the one Michelin starred Kitchen W8 and Sonny’s Kitchen in Barnes.

Howard, 50, former owner of The Square in Mayfair said he sold the two Michelin-starred venue this year as demand for formal eating is dropping. The veteran chef opened Elystan Street in South Kensington for a fresh and a somewhat greener start. He is serving a seasonal modern British menu with a strong focus on salads and a vegetable-heavy dishes.

This new beginning has enabled him to address pressures the industry puts on the environment. Elystan Street has banned bottled water, uses chemical-free cleaning products, and composts waste. Head chef Toby Burrowes (also previously The Square) is whipping up a variety of dishes. Just one of the four daily dishes is meat based, with two fish and one vegetarian.

Howard said: “People are much more specific now about what they want. There are less gluten and dairy on this menu for that reason. It will be lighter, cleaner. Once upon a time if you wanted something truly phenomenal you had to go to a fine dining restaurant. That’s just not the case anymore. Now, to go out for great food, most of us want to walk out the door without having to change clothes.”

The menus have different lunch and dinner formats where Phil promises to deliver dishes “full of natural vitality” to every eater. The roast grouse with celeriac and pear purée, autumn spring roll and elderberries is certainly a stand out dish. For those who want something a little more familiar, don’t miss out on the rump of lamb with pesto roasted aubergine, garlic, green olives and balsamic vinegar. It goes without saying but you’re in safe hands at Elystan.
