East London Liquor Company

OPENED

Head for Victoria Park from the Grove Road side and you’ll hit upon Bow Wharf, a collection of old industrial units that now includes a spirit distillery-come evening bar – the East London Liquor Company. Craft brewing has taken off all over London in recent years in the beer industry, but there are only a handful of spirit distilleries in town, and only one – this one – bringing the art back to the East end. The German-crafted copper stills that will produce the bar’s spirits are theatrically placed behind the bar, where large glass panelled windows give way to the East London Liquor Company’s secrets.

East London Liquor Company’s master distiller Jamie Baxter, who moved into spirit distillation from the wholesome world of muesli making, will oversee the production of three gin variants at first, which both Jamie and manager Alex Wolpert hope to be ready by July. Infusing the mix at first will be tea – which Just Opened can’t wait to try – and juniper berries – the third produced will be a classic London Dry. Vodkas are also created in the same still, and whiskies are made separately, all of which are to be oak-aged for a minimum of three years and a day.

That is, if you actually want ‘whisky’. East London’s masses are keen to try the next new thing; and taking new literally, Alex will be running tours around the distillery which include a cheeky swig of the pre-aged product – if you ask nicely – and get down at some point in the next three years…

It took Alex and his team six months to fully develop the bar’s interior feel – but only a week of that time involved decorating. Celebrating the merit of the original glue factory that sat on this spot, Alex and his team spent months removing layers of wallpaper and grime from the walls to reveal the original brickwork underneath. Simple furnishings have been added, and there’s a modest outdoor seating area, but the real decor is the distillery itself, stood behind the barmen who mix the gin it creates.

By night, soaked in a honeyed glaze, the distillery looks like a Roald Dahl creation; perched stoically behind the drinking masses to remind East London what they’re drinking.
