Dan Nathan’s Top 5 Butchers in London
Dan Nathan is the co-founder of Beef & Brew, a staple spot for top-quality steaks in Kentish Town and more recently, Haggerston. We spoke to him about his favourite butchers in London…
Meat N16 & NW5. Nathan says, ‘High-quality beef from Highland farms using Aberdeen Angus cattle. It’s great stuff, but don’t miss their other products: all their meat is great, their deli always has tempting offerings and they have a very decent selection of wine and beer’.

McKanna Meats. Nathan says, ‘A wonderful old-school butcher that also does wholesale. Whenever I go there I’m struck by how it can’t have changed for many a long year and it’s all the better for it’.

Godfreys. Nathan says, ‘This is a great neighbourhood butcher. A few years ago, I did a really enjoyable butchery course there with the owner, Chris Godfrey. There’s not much to pick between the butchers on this list, but I’ve certainly had one of the best steaks in my life from Godfrey’s; unusually it was a bavette, which is not normally my favourite cut’.

Turner & George. Nathan says, ‘I’ve been here twice and if I lived closer, I’d go all the time. It sells free-range, high-quality meat, rare breed beef and also stocks Gallician/Basque beef (from the same supplier we use). It classifies its cuts by how they should be cooked: steaks, roasts & braised. Its selection is second to none and it also sells excellent goat and mutton’.

The Ginger Pig. Nathan says, ‘Clichés are clichés for a reason and while I was reticent about putting them on the list because they are so well known, their meat is first class. Now that I live near their Victoria Park Village outpost, I’m a more frequent visitor – I had only been to their Marylebone outpost a few times, many years ago. Superb, well-sourced, well-aged beef, excellent sausage rolls and other meats too’.
