Cubé

OPENED 109 DAYS AGO

Cubé is a sushi and Japanese ‘tapas’ bar, now open in Mayfair.

The sushi bit we understand, but Japanese tapas? We think they just mean ‘snacks’, which is a lot less scary than the idea of chorizo and wasabi on the same plate.

The Spot:

The interior is understated, with lots of clean lines and bare wood. The best spots are at the bar, where you can watch the sushi chef at work.

The Food:

Chef Osamu Mizuno has come from Nobu and Sake no Hana and the sushi is a must-order. The nigiri comes in sets of three, six or nine and is selected by the chef according to what’s best that day. You can also order the same fish as sashimi.

This brings us to the ‘tapas’, a label we’re willing to overlook for the time being. Let’s think of them as small plates or snacks. This is a relatively pricey joint so expect some high-end ingredients like truffle and foie gras popping up in unexpected places, and there are a few dishes that sound… interesting. Baked tuna sausage, anyone?

Still, plenty sounds great, like the fresh tofu with yuzu chilli, and the scallop with sea urchin butter.

The Drinks:

If sake is your thing then you’ll be beside yourself because downstairs is a kakurega (meaning ‘hideaway’), which specialises in the alcoholic rice drink. They’ve got a collection of rare examples of sake down there, and offer a range of premium Japanese whiskies and cocktails, too.

The Damage:

This is Mayfair, so be prepared to pay accordingly. Five nigiri will set you back £13, and nine pieces £25. Itsu it ain’t. Single pieces are priced individually.

Tapas range from £5 to a whopping £30 for sashimi lobster tail and there’s an omakase menu (a set menu) for £75.

In a Nutshell:

The jury is out on that Japanese tapas, but the menu reads well and we’re keen to get stuck in anyway (innocent until proven guilty and all that). The sushi, however, seems a very safe bet, and this may just be a welcome addition to London’s limited collection of really decent sushi spots.
