Counter Kitchen

OPENED October 10th, 2016

Counter Kitchen, a café all about mindful eating, has just opened in East London – and it’s pretty damn good.

Those on the #eatclean team can rejoice, as there is now a new clean eating spot on the scene. Counter Kitchen is located along bustling Goswell Road, right in the heart of Clerkenwell, a neighbourhood overrun with creative types. It’s spot teeming with options for the culinary inclined such as Japanese tapas at Sosharu or pizza and pints at Wedge Issue.

The new cafe is the first venture by co-founders Benjamin Meyer and William Heath. The duo are bringing their expertise in finance and branding to the table, with plans to expand beyond this first location.

Heading up the kitchen is Chef Matt Edwards, previously of Quo Vadis, Fino and The Harwood Arms. The decor is stripped back but striking, with dine-in seating available both upstairs and down.

The excellent in-house team are on hand to illuminate and advise on the menu offerings, ordered from one counter and picked up at…. the kitchen (see what they did there).

Counter Kitchen aims to provide a casual, laidback and welcoming spot for visitors to eat, think and stay fighting fit. The concept? “Because mother nature nailed it.”

To that effect, its menu of salads, soups and cold press juices is kept simple, focusing on celebrating the natural flavours of food. On the juice front you have to give the fiery apple a whirl, perhaps the best pressed juice we’ve had since summer.

The café offers all-day dining, so early risers can stop in for one of their nutritious breakfasts. Just when you thought you had seen every possible variation of avo toast, Counter Kitchen rolls out its own version. Their inventive take is topped off with a cucumber kimchi, made to their own recipe.

For sweeter palates, try the almond butter toast, finished with raw honey and cacao nibs. The lunch menu features salads like their ‘Magic Mushroom’, a mixture of sautéed wild mushrooms with rosso leaves, soba noodle and pickled daikon.

Our personal favourite has to be ‘The Rabbit’; a slamming mix of roasted carrots, avocado, spinach and seeds. We chucked some extra chargrilled chicken on top – as is your right, with a plethora of additions available from chicken, salmon, grilled halloumi, tofu or poached egg.

In the mood for something a bit heartier? They have a range of ‘Warming Bowls’ as well, perfect for a little pick-me-up on a winters day. Try the ‘Kimchi Culture’, a dish of homemade kimchi, stewed beef broth, silken tofu, pak choi, ginger, garlic and black rice.

The drinks menu includes cold pressed juices, Allpress coffee and a selection of bio-dynamic wine.
