Coal Rooms

OPENED 87 DAYS AGO

Coal Rooms is a new restaurant from the people behind Old Spike Roastery and Aside, open in the old ticket office at Peckham Rye Station.

Locals have eagerly awaited the reopening of the Grade II listed former ticket office, originally part of the station in the 1930s.

The Spot:

The restored room is now a 24-seater cafe during the day and a bar in the evenings, with a large, sunken, open-plan kitchen.

There are 13 counter seats for those who like to dine alone but not hide in the corner, or just want a view of the action.

The Food:

There’s a big emphasis on the on-site butchery and the resulting cuts of meat, which are cooked on a robata grill — a Japanese-style charcoal grill.

Large cuts like Mangalitza cowboy steaks, 40-day aged Dexter beef rib and even whole cod heads will sizzle. In the morning there will be bacon sandwiches, filled with coffee-cured bacon that’s made in-house, with a choice of no fewer than three cuts of bacon.

Head chef Sam Bryant (formerly Smokehouse) has designed the menu with local influences in mind, so house sauces include a jerk caramel and mead ketchup (Gosnell’s mead is made just around the corner).

In a Nutshell:

This is a long-awaited opening and is sure to be a very popular spot with commuters, nabbing bacon sandwiches on their way to work. We’re very keen to see how it develops as an evening restaurant, however, and love their ambitious approach to in-house butchery and grilling. It’s bang on trend.
