CLAW

OPENED 195 DAYS AGO

Crab and seafood restaurant CLAW is now open in Soho.

It’s the first permanent restaurant from the street food business of the same name.

The Spot:

This is on Kingly Street, in an area which is turning into quite the gastronomic hotspot, with both Darjeeling Express and Pastaio opened nearby.

There’s room for 50 to eat in but also a takeaway option during the day, in keeping with their street food roots.

The Food:

There are two menus here: a street food menu (12pm-5pm) and a main menu (12pm-10.30pm). The street food menu focuses on their original love – one of the greatest of all sea creatures (by which we mean the tastiest) – the glorious crab.

There’s a crab roll, crab salad and those brilliant crab fries, which do what they say on the tin and so much more; hot fries, rustling fresh from the fryer are topped with a fluffy crown of white crab meat and lemon aioli. It’s like fish and chips only better, because it’s crab (can you tell we like crab?)

The main menu branches out more into other seafood, including fish fingers, oysters and a slow-cooked squid bolognese, served American-style in a ‘Sloppy Joe’ sandwich (usually filled with the meat version). There’s more crab (phew) including crab doughnuts and a killer crab mac n cheese which we’ve found ourselves getting quite territorial over on one memorable occasion.

There’s also some fried chicken because this is London and it’s practically mandatory now.

The Drinks:

The drinks menu isn’t huge but there are a few beers including the excellent citrus-punch that is Magic Rock High Wire, and a short cocktail menu. Their house G & T comes with samphire and there’s a ‘Seaside Negroni’ – all very on-brand.

The Damage:

Food is pretty affordable – street food dishes are £3-10 and main dishes £7-14.

A beer is around £4.50 but wines are quite punchy, with just two options for red, white or rose coming in at either around £30 or £40. A cocktail is around £7.

In a Nutshell:

We’re keen to see how these guys develop this site as we’ve enjoyed their street food but felt they were less successful at their residency at the Sun and 13 Cantons. We really hope they thrive in their own space (yes mainly because we really love crab).
