Claude Bosi at Bibendum

OPENED March 29th, 2017

Read our review of Claude Bosi at Bibendum.

Claude Bosi at Bibendum is a revival of a decades-old restaurant that specialises in simple French cuisine.

It’s the product of a collaboration between veteran restaurateur Sir Terence Conran and Claude Bosi, former head chef and owner of Hibiscus, which closed last year.

The Spot:

Claude Bosi at Bibendum resides at what used to be the Michelin headquarters. It was lovingly restored to an impressive restaurant, shop and office space in 1986 by Sir Terence Conran and Lord Paul Hamlyn.

When the original Bibendum first opened in 1987, the city was celebrating the arrival of a new, stripped-back version of French cooking, an alternative to the sort of over-the-top cuisine found at fine dining institutions. Bibendum dished up brilliant, simple French food on Fulham Road. It wasn’t long before its popularity established it as one of West London’s best restaurants, and it held its place for decades. Thirty years on, as all the best – or clever – establishments do, we’re seeing a little re-invention at Bibendum.

Exterior of Claude Bosi at Bibendum.

After a short hiatus and renovation, the Claude Bosi at Bibendum has opened afresh. The new offering is split over two floors: a casual dining affair downstairs, featuring the original oyster and seafood bar, while the upper level presents fine dining magic. The downstairs space is open seven days a week (no reservations), while upstairs is open from Wednesday to Sunday.

The Food:

With a man who bagged his first Michelin star at the tender age of 26 at the helm, it’s safe to say the food doesn’t pull any punches. Just don’t expect ostentatious dishes served in ways that would impress a West End set designer.

Claude Bosi sticks to the original ethos of Bibendum – and his own, for that matter – and keeps the French culinary offering pure and simple. You’ll find on the menu classics like roast chicken, beef fillet and oyster omelette with caviar.

The Drinks:

The restaurant’s wine list was put together by Isabelle Legeron, founder of Raw Wine, and highlights Rhône and Burgundy wines. You can also grab coffee from the ground-floor café.

In Their Own Words:

“This is an extremely exciting adventure for me,” Bosi said. “After 20 years of living and working in the UK, I’m looking forward to cooking my style of food in such an iconic building and putting my name above the door.”

In a Nutshell:

The Bibendum of old was an institution – the Bibendum of new might just carry its legacy to even greater heights, and maybe even secure that star it’s long been gunning for.
