Chick ‘n’ Sours

OPENED September 23rd, 2016

Chick ‘n’ Sours has just opened its second branch in Seven Dials, and it’s one of the best new places to eat in Central London

First launched on Kingsland Road in 2015, Carl Clarke and David Wolanski have now taken their business westwards. The new 40-cover space on Earlham Street has the same eclectic feel, mixing modern stylings with vintage and reclaimed elements.

The menu is largely similar to that of the Haggerston branch. Chick ‘n’ Sours favourites, like the Korean Fried Chicken Bun and Szechuan Aubergine, make a reappearance. Unsurprisingly, fried chicken is the star.

Go classic with the House Fry, finished with “seaweed crack” seasoning and served with pickled watermelon. The ever-changing Guest Fry is more worldly, drawing inspiration from other countries’ interpretations of fried chicken. The Disco Wings have been upgraded to a Hot and Numbing version, courtesy of a Mala spice rub.

There are, of course, some new additions. Kick things off with XO Pineapple, a refreshing dish of pineapple and XO sauce, toban-fermented chilli, ssamjang, lime and peanuts. The Mexinese nachos, smothered with a spicy Szechuan-style ragu and kimchi cheese sauce, are perfect for sharing.

Don’t miss out on the vegetarian bun which uses soy-pickled shiitake in place of chicken. Visiting on the weekend? Try the Cornbread & Kimchi waffle, with poached eggs, chicken skin and ssamjang hollandaise.

Alternatively, trade up your Sunday roast for the Sunday Whole Fry. Chick ‘n’ Sours cocktails aren’t too shabby either; try the House Sour with blackberries, Womersleys Farm’s lavender, lime & black pepper vinegar.

Like its older sister in Haggerston, they source from small independent producers. Fruit and veg come from Keveral Farm, while their free-range, herb-fed chicken is supplied by Pilmoore Grange Farm. The locally sourced ethos extends right through to the kitchen as all chicken is fried in British rapeseed oil.

We consider Chick ‘n’ Sours one of the 4 Best Chicken Restaurants in Central London, but don’t neglect to check out the other three. And once you’ve had your fill of chicken, explore more of the city’s food scene using our interactive map of London’s top restaurants and bars.
