Bryn Williams at Somerset House

OPENED 164 DAYS AGO

Chef Bryn Williams has opened a restaurant inside Somerset House on The Strand.

Bryn Williams at Somerset House focuses on modern British food and is Williams’ second London opening. Will it join neighbour Spring as one of the best restaurants in Central London?

The Spot:

The location is a big draw here; Bryn Williams joins Skye Gyngell (chef/patron of Spring) inside the beautiful arts and cultural centre, Somerset House. The restaurant is in the South Wing, and the eagle-eyed will spot naval details around the room, nodding to the building’s history. There’s also a display of paintings by Welsh fine art photographer, Allan Jenkins.

The Food:

Williams’ focus here is on vegetables, although the restaurant does also serve meat and fish. It joins a growing number of restaurants that choose to make vegetables the star of the show while not being entirely vegetarian, such as Chantelle Nicholson’s Tredwells.

The menu is split into small plates (of course) and seasonal main courses, and there’s a strong focus on sustainability and what’s in season. Example dishes include roasted young broccoli, olive tapenade, sage beignet and scorched red mullet; rainbow carrots, hand-dived scallop and sauterne; and pickled mooli with black garlic, raw apple, sage and Cumbrian beef.

There’s also a grill, so lots of veg will get the smoke and flame treatment, like the grilled cauliflower, golden raisin, capers and soft polenta.

Desserts are focused on fruit but don’t worry, they’re a lot more tempting than a supermarket fruit salad. Think bay leaf pannacotta with blackberry, lime curd and poached rhubarb and blood orange trifle. Not a manky banana slice or withered grape in sight.

The Drinks:

Beer lovers will rejoice as there’s a draught beer bar here, complete with gleaming overhead copper casks. Don’t fear though if beer isn’t your thing, wine and other drinks are available too.

In a Nutshell:

We’re keen to see what Bryn can do in this location and we’re intrigued by his veg-centric menu. He said of the opening, ‘I’m a firm believer that a piece of fruit or veg should be treated with the same amount of care and respect as a cut of meat or fillet of fish – if not more. I’m thrilled to have opened a new restaurant that’s not only in a stunning location, but where fresh, locally sourced produce is the focus and fruit and veg take centre stage.’
