Akira

OPENED 362 DAYS AGO

Japanese fine-dining restaurant Akira arrives on Kensington High Street.

Located inside Japan House – a new cultural home dedicated to Japanese art and culture – Akira brings Omotenashi (Japanese hospitality) to London.

The Spot:

Brought to you by Japan House together with esteemed chef Akira Shimizu – of Japanese restaurant Engawa – Akira offers an immersive Japanese dining experience, based on chef Akira’s trinity of cooking principles: food, tableware and presentation. Complimenting the dishes, chef Akira has designed the restaurant’s Japanese glassware in collaboration with artisans across Japan, while the space mimics the concept of a doma (a social space where family, friends and neighbours gather together).

The Food:

While chef Akira Shimizu currently has two restaurants in Tokyo, he has designed a menu especially for London, focusing on charcoal-grilled dishes and sushi. Highlights include kushiyaki skewer with chicken and a soy sauce glaze, salmon and tuna egg crepe roll with truffle cream cheese, and Botan prawn with ponzu jelly – there’s even fish and chips on the menu, albeit a more culinary version of the British staple. Chef Akira also brings some of his popular Tokyo dishes to London, including spicy fried chicken karaage on the bone and a Japanese Caesar salad.

The Drinks:

Akira serves cocktails made with Japanese ingredients such as sake, yuzu and shiso.

The Damage:

Dishes vary between £4 and £25.

In a Nutshell:

Chef Akira has built a reputation for traditional Japanese dining, from stunning sushi to impeccable service, and his new restaurant Akira seems to be no different.
