The Wondering Wine Kitchen

OPENED 167 DAYS AGO

If pop-ups and wine are two of your favourite things, have we got one for you. The Wondering Wine Kitchen, a pop-up wine bar, is one of East London’s latest restaurant openings.

This pop-up wine kitchen is brought to you by The Wondering Wine Company, which first launched in April 2016. The founders are a motley crew of wine-lovers: Simon Swift, Marco Jerrentrup and Mark Ashmore.

Pop-up Pros

They’ve been rolling up in their fleet of vintage vans to all sorts of events – sporting, cultural, music, you name it. From Cheltenham Jazz Festival, where they served a jazz-inspired menu, to Twickenham Stadium, Royal Ascot and Cornbury Festival, this wine kitchen marks the first time they’ve taken up permanent digs. Well, semi-permanent anyway; we’d expect no less from a group of wonderers.

The Wondering Wine Kitchen is housed within Old Street station, fast becoming a buzzing hub of pop-ups and independents. Designed by Finch, the interiors feature distressed elements and lots of light wood and neutrals, giving it a bright, open feel despite being underground. With all their wine on display, it’s not unlike being in a friend’s personal wine cellar. And in the evenings, it transforms into a cosy space with low lighting.

Wine with your toastie?

The menu at The Wondering Wine Kitchen consists of salads, toasties, small plates, as well as cheese and charcuterie boards. It’s deceptively simple, but there’s in fact a wine-pairing for every item – including the sourdough toasties! The Cheese & Truffle is paired with Little Eden Pinot Noir, while the Parma Ham, Mango, Olive Oil, Coriander & Chives is matched with their choice of Chianti. As for wine, you can choose from their hand-selected wine taps, and opt for a glass, carafe or bottle. Alternatively, why not bag yourself a ‘Bagnum’, and bring some home with you?

So what happens when two of your favourite things come together? We rather think too much of a good thing is quite wonderful – but we’ll leave it to you.

The Wondering Wine Kitchen is open until March 2017.
