The Cheese Bar

OPENED 170 DAYS AGO

The Cheese Bar is the first permanent restaurant of Mathew Carver, owner of the Cheese Truck, aka ‘Alfie.’

After three years of selling melted cheese goodness from an old ice cream truck, Carver is setting up permanent digs in Camden. The opening of the Cheese Bar is sure to be a great day for his 14,000 Instagram followers and the rest of London alike.

The Cheese Truck is the predecessor to the Cheese Bar, which has just opened in London.

The Spot:

The Cheese Bar is located in the historic, Grade 1 listed Camden Stables Market. Camden Market is a plethora of food stalls and restaurants, a hotspot for locals and tourists, making it one of North London’s most exciting places to eat. The Cheese Bar is in good company, alongside the likes of Voodoo Rays and Chai Thali.

The Food:

It comes as no surprise that the menu is entirely cheese focused. ‘Alfie’ classics like the Stilton, bacon & pear grilled sandwich and the fondue fries star alongside new dishes, including queso fundido and a breakfast poutine (cheese, candied pancetta, fried egg & bacon gravy – what’s not to like).

The Cheese Bar also champions a new breed of urban cheese makers, crafting produce within the M25. Producers like La Latteria, Gringa Dairy in Peckham and Kupros, who produce a 100% English sheep’s milk halloumi, will all be on show in the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling fridge displays.

For those of you who need some sweetness in your lives, fear not: there are desserts on offer, too. How does a dark chocolate ice cream sundae made with honey and creamy ewe’s milk cheese sound? Joyous.

The Drinks:

A changing selection of twenty or so craft beers will be served across the large marble-topped bar.

The Damage:

Grilled sandwiches at the Cheese Truck were around £4-6, and the Cheese Bar is likely to keep its prices in the same range.

In their own words:

“I can’t wait to be opening the Cheese Bar, it’s a dream come true!” Mathew Carver said. “‘Alfie’ and I have had some amazing adventures over the last three years; from the fields of Glastonbury to the deserts of the middle East, we’ve served over 150,000 sandwiches and melted over 20 tonnes of British cheese. Now we’re ready to leave the trucks at home and set up shop in Camden Town.”

In a Nutshell:

Local cheeses paired with craft beers in Camden Market. An utterly brilliant combination that promises to deliver on all fronts. One to watch in 2017.
