Tamarind Kitchen

OPENED 84 DAYS AGO

Tamarind Kitchen, the latest addition to the Tamarind Collection, is an Indian restaurant located in Soho on Wardour Street.

Tamarind of Mayfair has gained a sister site: Tamarind Kitchen is the latest in the wave of new Indian restaurants hitting London.

The Spot:

As the newest venture from the team behind Tamarind of Mayfair and Zaika of Kensington, there can only be high expectations for what this restaurant will bring to Central London’s drinking & dining scene. Tamarind of Mayfair was one of the first Indian restaurants in the world to receive a Michelin star, and Tamarind Kitchen hopes to bring the same quality of exquisite Indian dining to Soho in a less formal setting.

The restaurant occupies the space that formerly housed Imli Street. It’s tucked away on Wardour Street, AKA foodie heaven. Inspired by the palatial architecture of Northern India, the interiors are designed to recall the royal kitchens of the Moghuls.

The Food:

Chef Peter Joseph put together Tamarind Kitchen‘s food offering, a redesigned version of its sister restaurant’s menu that retains the same quality and elegance. Joseph is also head chef at Tamarind of Mayfair and has been with the Tamarind Collection for over ten years.

Traditional Moghul cuisine is the focus of the menu, and classic tandoori delights make a welcome appearance. The menu is split into appetisers, kebabs, mains and vegetables, as well as equally important accompaniments. There are plenty of classic favourites to choose from, including chicken tikka masala, Hyderabadi gosht and saag paneer. You’ll also enjoy their special dishes, such as the game platter, Alleppey fish curry and pudhina chops.

Vegetarians are no afterthought on this menu, either – flavoursome veggie options include pindi channa, tandoori subzi and makai cucumber. If these dishes are on the spicy side, accompany them with a dal or the delicious boondi raita.

You’ll want to leave room for dessert, too, as Tamarind Kitchen‘s masala chai brûlée and their chocolate and cashew brownie are not to be missed.

The Drinks:

Classic Indian flavours run throughout the drinks menu, with favourites such as rose, cardamom, saffron and mango lassi making the cut in the cocktails. A fantastic selection of wines, fresh juices and lassis are also available.

The Damage:

Main dishes average £10-15, and cocktails will set you back around £9. Desserts range from £4-8.

In a Nutshell:

Tamarind Collection’s newest addition brings fine Moghul cuisine to Wardour Street. Its vibrant menu features both classic and contemporary takes on Indian dishes, as well as heavenly desserts. And the quietly luxurious interior is a perfect fit for its low-key Soho location.
