Street XO

OPENED October 31st, 2016

‘BEST OPENINGS OF 2016’ WINNER

Street XO is one of Central London’s best new restaurants. The London outpost of the original Madrid establishment has just opened in Mayfair.

Street XO, and its three-Michelin-starred sibling Diver XO, has hosted everyone from Anthony Bourdain to Mark Zuckerberg. Unsurprising, then, that there are always queues out the door. Another problem? It’s in Madrid. But now, with its launch in the big smoke, Londoners no longer have to hop on a plane to get a taste. You might still have to queue, though.

Before you start reading too much into it, ‘Street XO’ is not a reference to the hugs and kisses we’re all guilty of so frivolously giving away. ‘XO’ is actually a pun only the bilingual will understand, as ‘XO’ is pronounced ‘show’. And indeed, theatre is a big part of the dining experience here.

Chefs, Chefs and… Chefs

It’s no accident that 80% of the staff are chefs, as the final flourishes are applied at the table. But we would expect no less from David Muñoz, “the enfant terrible of Spanish gastronomy”, his trademark Mohawk a testament to his urban vibe.

Street XO London 2

This is not so much a welcome to London as a welcome back, as Muñoz had worked previously at the likes of Nobu and Hakkasan.

Half the menu has been taken from the original Street XO while the rest is brand-new. The dishes draw inspiration from European, Asian and South American cuisines, underpinned by a strong Mediterranean or East Asian influence.

Experimental Cocktails

There’s Pekinese dumpling with crunchy pig’s ear and strawberry hoi sin, and kimchi croquetas, tuna steak and burnt butter.

Equally experimental are the cocktails. The ‘Japo, Jerez’, for example, has smoked pea soda, shiso, miso, yuzu, sake and palo cortado in it, and is served with flamed street shrimp.

The 100-seater space is designed by Lázaro Rosa-Violán studio, which also did their Madrid restaurant. The tables are available for booking, which might be a good idea (remember that queue we mentioned).

Other great places to eat in the Mayfair area include Jinjuu and Jamavar. Check our Just Opened Map of London’s newest restaurants for more options.
