Sparrow is a new neighbourhood restaurant in Lewisham.

Husband and wife team Terry Blake and Yohini Nandakumar first met while working at St. John and together have an impressive culinary history, including stints at Bao, Merchant’s Tavern, Pollen Street Social and The Square. This new restaurant is a way of celebrating the food that they love.

Interior at Sparrow

The Spot:

Just a stone’s throw from Lewisham station, Sparrow is sure to join the ranks of the best neighbourhood restaurants in South London. The style is elegant, yet neighbourly and informal, with simple, antique tables and chairs surrounding a central, open kitchen clad in emerald-coloured V & A wall tiles. Classy.

The Food:

The menu reflects the pair’s mixed culinary influences, with a combo of British and Asian ingredients appearing in dishes such as fried rabbit with satay sauce and bang bang beef ribs with anchovy-miso eggplant (aubergine). Desserts, too, take global inspiration with an American-style baked cheesecake, a condensed milk affogato and a dark chocolate and caramel tart, which sounds like the must-order dish.

At the weekends, Sparrow opens up for brunch, serving familiar dishes such as eggs Benedict, alongside those inspired by Yohini’s Sri Lankan heritage, including appam – a lacy pancake made with fermented rice batter. We also love the sound of coconut pancakes with peanut caramel, for those who like to kickstart the day with a sugar rush.

The Drinks:

The drinks menu is keen and lean, with some well-chosen beers from Hackney based brewers Five Points, a selection of East London gin and tonics and a neat little wine list.

The Damage:

You can forget anything as traditional as ordering a starter and main course, choosing instead from a selection of plates which range from £2.50 for a nibble of bruschetta to £15 for some substantial beef ribs. Desserts come in at an average of £5 and it’s £9 for a selection of Neal’s Yard cheeses. The wine list is well-priced too, starting at £23 with nothing over £33.

In a Nutshell:

Sparrow is a restaurant designed to serve the local community, from a couple who believe that, ‘taking influences from different parts of the world and combining with great produce gives… the opportunity and the freedom to make a plate of food as delicious as it can be.’ Amen to that.
